In the beginning of October, the Alta Vista first grades will begin differentiated reading groups as part of our Response to Instruction program. Students will be grouped according to their instructional reading level, as determined by two reading assessments. They will be receiving explicit reading instruction at their level to meet their needs. Within those groups, students will practice reading and work on reading concepts and skills. Instruction, pacing, and activities will be differentiated to meet the needs of each group. Students will rotate four times each week for one hour. After RtI, students will return to their homeroom for the remainder of their Language Arts instruction.
RtI gives teachers an opportunity to more effectively help each student feel successful in reaching his/her potential. A large component of this model involves teacher collaboration for planning lessons and communicating student achievement to the homeroom teachers. As students progress, our team will discuss and determine how to best adjust the level and pacing of instruction within groups or regrouping students to more effectively meet their needs.
