The Garden Club is open to grades 4 and 5 for those who would like to meet at lunchtime on designated days out in the garden. Students help maintain the garden, learn about a variety of plants and trees, and help with weeding, planting, and harvesting. Parents with gardening skills or just a love of gardening are welcome to join us and help groups of students with projects.
Classes also utilize our garden as an extension of the classroom life science curriculum to learn about the life cycle of plants, release newly hatched butterflies, learn about composting, and the importance of caring for our environment, as well as grow flowers and vegetables. At any given time during the year, one might observe students growing pumpkins squash, green beans, strawberries, peppers, poppies, and sunflowers.
Most recently, we contracted a local artist, Morgan Bricca (Murals by Morgan), to paint a colorful, delightful garden scene on the end of the kindergarten wing that perfectly compliments our school garden. This lovely mural was made possible thanks to the generous donations from Alta Vista’s Home and School Club, Student Council and Girl Scouts!
