Learning at Alta Vista
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
MTSS, an acronym for “multi-tiered system of supports,” is an organizational framework used in education settings to ensure that all students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs are met through interventions across three levels of support.
A multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) provides a guiding, comprehensive framework for educators, school, and district leaders. This framework allows educators to:
Remove barriers to learning at the systems level.
Use evidence-based practices to ensure all students are learning at grade-level.
Make data-based decisions for targeted and intensive interventions.
Academics
Our teachers are dedicated to helping all students achieve success. Working in collaboration, they design and plan lessons for each grade level that integrate technology and small group instruction using various curriculum resources. Learn more about curriculum used in Union School District.

Social Emotional Learning with Kimochis
At Alta Vista, we use the Kimochis® program in grades TK-5th Grade. The lessons in the Kimochis® SEL Curriculum teach real-life skills, such as communication, self-management, decision-making, problem-solving, resilience, and responsibility. These are the skills that help us all become successful in life and in school. Kimochis® lessons teach children to be:
Respectful: Use a respectful voice, face, words and actions; listen to upset feelings
Responsible: Speak up for self or others; admit and own mistakes
Resilient: Work through emotion alone or with help; bounce back from difficult moments
Compassionate and Kind: Have empathy or concern for others; look for moments to be kind to self and others
